Pemberton: Silkwood Wines

The drawback of Pemberton being small is that places to eat and drink are limited.

Our first choice no longer has a chef. Others weren't even open.

Thankfully Silkwood Wines, located on stunning manicured grounds at the edge of a lake, was and serving lunch. Given the wrap around deck was full, we knew we were onto a good thing.

Bruce the pram was pleased with the outdoor heaters and plenty if space to park up for lunch. And Mini Me was on her best behaviour too.

We started with a little wine tasting to choose a drink to go with lunch. The sparkling wine was crisp and light. The premium red went down smoothly. But it was the Zinfandel with its curranty flavour that took our fancy.

I sound like a snotty wine snob don't I! After years of drinking the stuff I'm glad I learnt something.

Who said parenting and a little wine tasting don't mix
What I clearly didn't learn is what wine goes with what food. I just likes what I like.

We were tempted by the mammoth share platter, which I ogled on the table near us. Or the juicy lamb shank I saw on the other table near us. But I knew we'd be devouring cheese and dips back at the chalet.

So I chose a caramelised onion tart and Hubby picked the steak sandwich.

The tart was topped with a mushroom stuffed with pesto and topped with marinated capsicum. Inside it was brimming with sweet onions and surrounded by flaky pastry. The dish was finished with a nice side salad.

Hubby was once again impressed that his order was heavy on filling and not on bread. Bursting with medium rare steak, onion jam, eggs with bright yolks, tomato and salad, the juicy steak sandwich struggled to stay together. It came with crunchy beer battered chips you couldn't stop eating.

The service was sporadic, and though we asked for the dessert menu, it was forgotten. Mini Me decided she'd had enough and started wailing. A sign that maybe we didn't need that sticky date pudding. At least she's watching out for my hips.

Though we visited Silkwood Wines because it was one of the few places to choose from, we were not disappointed.

Great views. Easy wines. Homey food. Winning.
