A new world: Mum & Bub movie watching

Motherhood has opened a whole new world for me I didn't even know about. Cracked nipples, leaking boobs, large breasts (hmmm... Sensing a theme).

And in discovering the day time habitats of mothers I've uncovered mum and bub movies.

I always thought non-school holiday cinemas were visited during the day by the unemployed, elderly or kids skipping school. They always say 'go to the movies before bub is born because you'll never get a chance after'. But you can.

Event Cinemas has 'Babes in Arms', Grand Cinemas 'Bubs Club' and Hoyts 'Mums and Bubs'. These heavily discounted special sessions each week out of school holidays allow you to take bub, the pram and yourself to the movies.

The sound is reduced for baby ears, but is loud enough for you to get that movie experience. The cinema lighting is dim enough to see what you're doing with bub while not affecting the movie. And you can breastfeed, let baby cry and change nappies all you want.

Intrigued by this new world, Mummy T and Mummy C took our clones to see The Heat at Grand Cinemas Joondalup yesterday.

The good
It was only $8, which matters a lot for what I'll say in a sec. It's something other than coffee to do during the day. Everyone is in the same situation so you can breastfeed comfortably and not feel guilty when baby cries.

The bad
This brings me to the bad points. It's a less than relaxing experience. Expect crying, people moving around and your own baby to have such a big poo it goes through the nappy and clothes onto you (yes that happened to me). It does mean you may not fully watch the movie.

And prams were not meant to come into the cinema. Allegedly. Instead they blocked the aisles and exit. Here's hoping there wasn't a fire to quickly flee from.

How to survive a movie mum & bub session
  • Go early. For once everyone wants the aisle seat. If you don't want to climb over others and want that seat, get in early.
  • Leave the pram at home. Or like me have a collapsible one that can slide between two prams. There was hardly any room to park Bruce. Or see above point.
  • Easy watching. Don't expect to watch and understand Inception at this type of session. Chick flicks, comedy, kids movies are perfect choices.
  • Roll with it. You can't shush, you can't get annoyed. Just embrace it and take it for what it is.
  • Just leave. But if you can't roll with it, leave, you've hardly wasted any money.

Would I do it again? Probably on my own of there was a movie I really wanted to see. I do love the idea behind it and think its a great option to escape the couch and Foxtel.

Did I like the movie? Laughed so much, the wet shirt could've been from me or Mini Me.
