Year of dates - Red carpet cinema treatment

Love is in the air, but not at our home. That's the smell of nappies and coriander (I'm going through a Thai-cooking phase).

No, it's outside. Four couples very close to us are engaged. Their love and happiness is infectious. And expensive. We've had three engagement parties in a row, and one more in November. Don't even get me started on the weddings.

But all this love was in stark comparison to what is happening in our home. We have just been too busy for romance or even each other. Then you start to neglect and be mean.

Which is why September whizzed by and we never scheduled our next date a month for a year. We opened it, but couldn't find the time to leave Mini Me with a babysitter and go out one night. And this month was a simple Gold Class movie night.

But better late than never and here we are doing September's date in October - Gold Class.

We left a sick bub with her grandpa for a Saturday night movie and meal.

Again I picked this month to be close to home, should we have spawned Satan's devil child.

Date pros:
We're tired and it was nice to switch off, recline and not have to think about anything other than will Sandra Bullock survive (we watched Gravity)? It felt very grown up, very glam.

I love that the cinema is quiet because there are hardly any people, the food is way above stodgy popcorn and the chairs recline. Comfort. It's the perfect date night for parents if nightmare children who just need to escape.

Date cons:
Regardless of the Gold Class experience, every time I go to the movies I'm floored by the cost. I know downloading movies means less people go, but come on, you have to remain competitive!

It's not cheap at all. I had pre-bought a gift card and it only just covered the tickets. And the good is nice, but $25 for three sliders? They're fancy, tasty and filling, but it's still $25 for a burger.

Finances aside, what we needed was a chance to reconnect and talk. This date didn't allow us to do that. Sure we spoke a bit before and after, but there's a lot that's unsaid and we need to have it out. Thankfully the movie was short and we had a good chat at home that night.

The verdict:
Great if you want to escape. It's not great if you want to reconnect.

The good thing is we've opened October and there were two options to choose from... you'll read about those soon.
