I'm all about efficiency.
That's why if I'm siting at a traffic light for three long minutes twiddling my thumbs I figure they should get to work. Hello, I'm a Traffic Light Texter.
If you haven't heard from me in a while and I've texted you, I was probably in my car.
My excuse is that's when I've actually thought of you. Normally I'm rushing around being awesome and driving is when I've stopped to think about other people's awesomeness. Oh and road rules.
Aside from being illegal, it's a slippery slope. Did I need to check that text the instant you sent it? No. Do I need to tell you I passed a lady walking a cat? Probably not. Do I need to check Facebook in the car because it's been like an hour since I had a news feed update? Definitely not.
I can't believe I find myself checking Facebook and Instagram in the car. What earth shattering news will I discover that the radio won't tell me?
Oh, Tiffany loves John again because he's brought her burgers in bed because she's sick, again and they're at their house with the dogs. Oh, Adrian posted another ambiguous sports rant. Another sponsored ad, another baby picture, another competition. It's really not timely need-to-know news. And it's certainly not imperative I read it when I'm 500metres from home.
That's why I've given myself a car-phone ban for at least a week a part of my 101 in 1001.
No texting, no calling (unless someone rings me and the Bluetooth picks it up because it's already interrupted my jam with Katie Perry), no Facebooking, no Google Maps, no iTunes... No touchy the phone. Capesh?
It's been four days. It's ironic because I'm sitting in the car writing this. I'm saying it's okay, on the technicality that Mini Me is asleep, which is always my phone time, in her car seat before we venture out for a picnic.
It has been surprisingly hard, but I've survived. And I'm technically still going strong... I could sit outside and write, but Katy Perry's on.
Day 1 - Monday
Itchy, itchy hands. So many people to text to see how their weekend went. And Mini Me actually swam today, on her own. Must. Brag. To. Grandparents. I've been sitting at this traffic light for HOURS. What if Facebook died in the last hour and I'm the last to know? Ha ha! Will power triumphant over Thumbs. Score one for me.
Day 2 - Tuesday
Easy peasy. Car was put in to get a faulty brake replaced. I can't believe I've spent a year driving around that death trap until there was a product recall. We're safe. Phone's untouched. Winning.
Day 3 - Wednesday
I hate tardiness and phones do give you an excuse to be late because you can text enroute to say you're late. Not today. I just got my act together and got there on time. What phone?
Day 4 - today
Yes I'm in my car. But I still haven't touched my phone while driving. Even though the radio was playing the most horrible and repetitive songs and I really wanted to play something from my mix, I resisted. I turned off the radio and sat in silence. Bliss.
I'm hoping the next few days will see my kick the habit. Stay tuned. Day 5 could be a killer.
